Golf Without Majors

Since the Open Championship was first played in 1860, less than six months before the start of the U.S. Civil War, golf’s benchmark championships have reflected the successes and travails of human history.

Two World Wars shut down competition. But this year marks the first time in golf history that a worldwide health crisis – the COVID-19 pandemic – was the sole reason to disrupt golf’s major tradition.

Here is how golf’s majors navigated through previous uncertain times:

1943 was the last year no major golf championship was played.

The PGA Championship has been cancelled twice: from 1917-18, because of World War I, and in 1943, during World War II.

The U.S. Open was not played from 1917-18, because of World War I, and from 1942-45 due to World War II.

The PGA Championship and the Masters were the only majors conducted during the time of U.S. involvement in World War II.

In this video, Neil Tappin takes a look at how to avoid these 6 golf gear disasters. This are errors most golfers have made at some point and they range from bigger issues relating to your clubs to the annoying avoidable ones that relate to the other things you carry. Hopefully this video gives you an idea of some of the pitfalls and how to avoid them when it comes to the golf gear you carry with you!

In this video, Neil Tappin is joined by PGA professional Alex Elliott to discuss the 7 reasons you don't get better at golf. Often golfers practice in a way that is less than optimal and often actually does more harm than good. Neil and Alex discuss those points here, dispelling myths and offering some simple pointers for how to avoid falling into these traps. Take a look and let us know what you think of the 7 reasons you don't get better at golf.

Updated USGA Statement on Coronavirus

Given the recent CDC guidance and the evolving dynamics of the Coronavirus pandemic, the USGA announced today that it has canceled its first two 2020 championships, the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball, originally scheduled for April 25-29 at Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Fla., and the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, originally scheduled for May 23-27 at Philadelphia (Pa.) Cricket Club. These championships will not be rescheduled in 2020.

In addition, the USGA has canceled local (first stage) qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Open and qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Women's Open in their current forms, and in conjunction with our Allied Golf Association (AGA) partners and International Federations, will look to redesign qualifying going forward as events unfold. We will continue to hold the dates for the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open at Champions Golf Club and the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club.

At this time, it is premature to speculate what might occur with other 2020 USGA championships. We will continue to monitor all available guidance and regulations from the CDC, WHO and other federal, state and local authorities to do what is in the best interests of our community. We appreciate everyone's understanding and support during these unprecedented times.

9 Golf Holes with Unique Features

Golf courses are like snowflakes -- no two are the same.

Sure, there may be courses with similar holes, similar features and trademark designs implemented by its designer, but they all have their differences no matter how subtle.

The holes we're about to show you, well, their like no other holes/stretch of holes in the golf.

Here's a look at nine unique golf holes in the world.

9. Oakmont Country Club's 'Church Pews' bunker

Lying between the third and fourth fairways at famed Oakmont, the Church Pews will swallow up tee shots that are hooked off either tee. The Church Pews are 102 yards in length with 12 grass islands. About 4-6 yards of sand is between each of the 12 islands. It's an incredible feature for a course many regard as among the most difficult in the world.

8. Scottsdale National's 15th hole 'Mine Shaft' bunker

This difficult par 5 is a hole of horrors and the scariest part is right around the green with its 12-foot deep 'Mine Shaft' bunker -- a bunker so severe very few are lucky enough to escape in a single shot. And if you are one of those lucky ones, chances are that shot was played away from the hole.

In this video, Golf Monthly Editor Mike Harris talks you through the top five stand bags on the market in 2020. Assessing areas like the styling, features and ease of use, he eventually picks his favorite so make sure you watch to the end to find out which model earns the crown of best stand bag 2020.

Masters Postponed due to Coronavirus

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Augusta National decided Monday to postpone the Masters because of the spread of the coronavirus.

Club chairman Fred Ridley says he hopes postponing the event puts Augusta National in the best position to host the Masters and its other two events at some later date.

Ridley did not say when it would be held. The PGA Tour has canceled all events through the Masters, and golf has a full schedule of events through the year.

The next major would be the PGA Championship in San Francisco in May.
