LIMITED TICKET PACKAGES FOR 16TH VENUE ON SALE NOW HERE

The Thunderbirds – hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open – are moving forward with a scaled-down version of the 16th Hole in anticipation of hosting fans at the 2021 tournament, scheduled for February 1-7 at TPC Scottsdale. Construction of the one-level, open-air venue that will surround the 16th hole began in late November as tournament officials prepare for the 86th edition of “The People’s Open,” which is now less than 50 days away.

Limited ticket packages for the 16th hole venue are currently on sale to the public at WMPhoenixOpen.com. A decision on the availability of limited general admission tickets will be made in the coming weeks.

“As we announced earlier this year, the footprint for the 2021 tournament will be entirely different due to COVID-19,” said 2021 Tournament Chairman Scott Jenkins said. “But we always hoped to have some kind of presence at our iconic 16th hole with or even without our fans. After many discussions with the PGA TOUR and local health officials, we are moving forward with a plan to have limited spectators at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Ultimately, if the decision is made by local health officials to allow spectators, it will be a small fraction of the normal capacity at TPC Scottsdale and not any different from what many other professional sports are currently allowing across the country. The health and safety of fans is our top priority. The 192-acre layout of TPC Scottsdale and the outdoor nature of the tournament is conducive to social distancing. We will implement COVID safety protocols not only on the 16th hole, but also throughout the entire tournament grounds in order to mitigate risk for the players, volunteers and limited fans.

World Golf Hall of Fame will welcome its next class of inductees on March 9, 2022 during the week of THE PLAYERS Championship. The class includes competitors Tiger Woods and Susie Maxwell Berning along with contributors Tim Finchem and the late Marion Hollins. The Induction Class was announced earlier this year with the ceremony originally scheduled to take place in 2021.

“Given the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, moving the ceremony back a year will give us a better opportunity to properly recognize and honor this important class,” said Greg McLaughlin, chief executive officer of the World Golf Foundation. “We look forward to shining a light on their achievements and inspiring future golfers around the world through this ceremony and celebration.”

Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau aren’t in the Middle East this week, but one professional golfer took a page out of both players' books in Wednesday’s opening round of the Golf in Dubai Championship.

England’s Callum Shinkwin carried two different drivers in his bag, his uncommon setup also including a 3-wood and three wedges, in a move that likened to Mickelson’s strategy in winning the 2006 BellSouth Classic. (Mickelson most recently competed with two drivers at last year’s Memorial Tournament.) Shinkwin's drivers were both Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero models, but featured different lofts and shaft lengths. One of the shafts was 48 inches long, a length that DeChambeau has experimented with but hasn't actually put into play yet.

Shinkwin’s decision paid off, too, as he ranked second in the field by averaging 328.5 yards off the tee in the first round. He also shot 4-under 68.

In Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Change at Stone Canyon Golf Club, Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley defeated Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning 4&3. More importantly, over $5.4 million was raised to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and organizations that support them. Over 3.5 million meals were also donated to Feeding America as part of some of the charitable efforts linked to the contest.

Every Shot From Dustin Johnson's Final Round

Nothing ever comes easily for Dustin Johnson in the majors, except for when he slipped his arms through that Masters green jacket Sunday.

Johnson overcame a jittery start that conjured memories of past majors he failed to finish off. He turned that into a command performance, making sure this one-of-a-kind Masters with no fans also had no drama.

Not even close.

Johnson tapped in for par on the 18th for a 4-under 68 to finish at 20-under 268, breaking by two shots the record set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and matched by Jordan Spieth in 2015.

His five-shot victory was the largest at the Masters since Woods won by 12 in 1997. All that was missing were the roars from a crowd for any of his pivotal putts early and his birdie putts on the back nine that put it away.

“It still feels like a dream,” Johnson said. “As a kid, you're dreaming about winning the Masters, having Tiger put the green jacket on you. I'm here and what a great feeling it is. I couldn't be more excited.”

The Masters, postponed from April because of the COVID-19 pandemic, was forced to do without patrons for the first time. Johnson still received a warm reception coming up the 18th from club members and their wives, his partner, Paulina Gretzky, and a few champions. Two-time champion Bubba Watson was there to congratulate him.

“I always dreamed of having one of those,” Johnson said as he went to sign his card. “Now I got one.”
