As the professional women begin competing in the AIG Women’s Open this week, we all dream about taking a trip over to experience links-style golf in Scotland. Before we can discuss the 5 most important items you must pack for your next excursion, it’s important to understand what makes links golf so different. The phrase “links golf” was coined based on the type of soil courses are played on. It doesn’t mean there are no trees or near the water.

Courses are considered links-style because they are built on the land that “links” the agricultural (farming) land to the seascape. The soil composition is terrible for farming but great for building firm and fast surfaces. Combine that feature with a commonly windy location along the water and you get a better appreciation for how to prepare.

1. Stay Calm
I've been there...many, many times, when things are just going off the rails and no matter what I do, it doesn't seem as though I can ever get things back on track. A big part of this happening has to do with the expectations I have for what a "Good Round" looks like for me or what a "Good Shot" looks like. If I don’t pull that "Good Shot" off, then my brain almost always goes into panic mode. Sometimes I can calm down and gather myself and other times, especially after a series of bad shots, it's tougher. When in panic mode, I get tense, start to hurry things up and my normal flow gets knocked off. Learning how to stay calm, mentally, will help the physical manifestations of this from taking over.

The Thunderbirds, hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, announced today tickets are now on sale for the 2022 tournament, scheduled to be played Feb. 7-13 at TPC Scottsdale. Additionally, Tournament Chairman Michael Golding unveiled plans for the 2022 edition of “The People’s Open,” saying The Thunderbirds are optimistic and preparing to resume traditional tournament operations, build venues, welcome fans and host activities typically seen during tournament week.

“We are excited to prepare for the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open and look forward to giving back in a big way to our community,” said Tournament Chairman Michael Golding. “Last year brought extraordinary circumstances which required us to make some significant changes. It was difficult for everyone, but this year we plan on making a concerted effort to return to the normal operations of ‘The People’s Open’ our fans know and love.”

TOKYO – Justin Thomas never questioned whether he wanted to play in the Olympics’ golf competition.

The Games were a goal “as soon as they announced it was in the Olympics,” he said Wednesday in his pre-tournament press conference from Kasumigaseki Country Club.

Thomas has embraced the Olympic experience, or as much as one can in these COVID-19 times. He went to the Olympic Village for a workout and spent time with the U.S. basketball team. He’s proud to be associated with the best athletes in a wide variety of sports. Walking into his hotel room and seeing all the red, white and blue apparel emblazoned brought a smile to his face.

“It might be the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “There’s not very often where you get so excited about just being part of a tournament.”

As some the country’s best young female golfers tee it up this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky for the 2021 Girls Junior PGA Championship, they do so at a time when the game is as popular as it’s ever been among women. Despite that, golf is still largely a male dominated sport.
