The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a little more than four months away – 125 days to be exact – but construction at TPC Scottsdale has already started to build the “city” which will house the loudest and greatest fans in golf.

The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open – got things going on in late September due to the time and material it takes to build the luxury suites, grandstands, bleachers and all the other iconic infrastructure for which “The People’s Open” is known.

Construction official started with the Cove on the 17th hole before groups moved on to the iconic 16th hole and the rest of the WMPO build which began on Monday, Oct. 4.

The lineup for the 2022 Coors Light Birds Nest is taking shape as three major music stars – Sam Hunt, Macklemore and KYGO – have committed to perform at the popular concert series that will take place Feb. 9-12 during Waste Management Phoenix Open Week. Tickets for these star-studded shows are now on sale and can be purchased at www.coorslightbirdsnest.com. The Wednesday headline act and remaining Coors Light Birds Nest lineup will be announced as more artists are confirmed.

In 1997, John Daly became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to average more than 300 yards per drive (302 to be exact). That year, he was more than 30 yards longer than the average Tour player.

In 1980 (the first year that the PGA Tour’s driving distance stats are available), Dan Pohl led the field while averaging 274.3 yards per drive. The Tour average was a meek 256.89 yards.

Since then, the average driving distance has steadily increased, rocketing upwards in the ‘90s and early 2000s. For 13 years — from 1994 until 2006 — the average increased every year, which is the longest such string since 1980. During that stretch, Daly led the Tour off the tee eight years in a row.

ATLANTA – Patrick Cantlay will take a lead of anywhere between two (over Tony Finau) and 10 strokes (over five players) into the opening round of the season-ending TOUR Championship at East Lake, which will decide the winner of the FedExCup. All can agree on that.

What is less clear is how significant that is.

“I don't know another format even remotely close to this,” said Cantlay, who in winning last week’s BMW Championship was +14.58 Strokes Gained: Putting, a PGA TOUR record. “I'm going to do my best to throw that out the window and try and treat it like any other golf tournament because the best chance for me succeeding is shooting the lowest score possible.”
