Rory McIlroy on the historical significance of national open tournaments
TORONTO, Ont. – Rory McIlroy marked his ball with a Canadian $1 coin, nicknamed a ‘Loonie,’ the last time he played the RBC Canadian Open. He received one from his pro-am partner in 2019 and that extra luck worked. He won.
This year, tournament organizers came prepared.
“I turned up to the locker room and there was already one in my locker,” said McIlroy with a smile. “And then one of my pro-am partners gave me one this morning on the first green as well.
In the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday 2022, Billy Horschel carded an even-par 72, and at 13-under after 72 holes, won his seventh PGA TOUR title by four shots.
The United States finalized its roster for the 30th PGA Cup, which will be conducted Sept. 12-18, at the Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey, England.
The Americans secured the Llandudno International Trophy in the most recent playing of the PGA Cup, in September 2018, with a historic 14-12 comeback victory over Great Britain & Ireland that featured wins in eight of 10 Sunday singles matches.
The 10-member U.S. Team in the biennial international showcase for PGA Club Professionals was determined through a two-year points system that includes the past two PGA Professional Championships and two PGA Championships.

In the final round of the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson, Hideki Matsuyama shot a 10-under 62, getting to 24-under par to end the tournament, finishing in a tie for third.

I was lucky enough to be a part of, and witness, the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits as an Assistant Golf Professional. My role included seeing the players both before and after their practice rounds and the matches. It was fascinating to watch the variety of demeanors among the players from both sides. Scottie Scheffler, one of the heroes of the U.S. Team, was visibly nervous. Fellow rookie Patrick Cantlay, showed nothing but calm and focus.
Meanwhile, Team Europe walked through the halls full of energy. Paul Casey actually came up to me and asked: “What’s a cheesehead anyway?” with a smile. They embraced the environment like no other team I have seen before. Every player was so different, and every player was there to win.
