Webb Simpson is Your 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open Champion

The 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open has come to an exciting end with thousands of golf fans once again pushing off the Super Bowl to see who would be crowned The People’s Open Champion. After finishing in second place to 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama in a four-hole playoff, Webb Simpson now finds himself in the TPC Scottsdale winner’s circle after yet another thrilling sudden-death playoff against perennial contender Tony Finau. Simpson, who won the 2012 U.S. Open, now has six wins on the PGA TOUR, with his most victory coming at the 2018 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Simpson started Sunday’s round in the final group at 15-under par just one shot back of the leader, Tony Finau. A birdie on four allowed Simpson to take a share of the lead before it was quickly erased by a bogey on seven. Finau had birdies on 12 and 13 to take a two-stroke lead going into the TPC Scottsdale “Stadium Stretch” but couldn’t convert birdie putts on any of the final five holes. Simpson’s birdies on 17 and 18 forced a playoff with Finau who found the bunker off the tee on the first playoff hole, where Simpson made three-straight birdie putts (17, 18 and first playoff hole) to win his first PGA TOUR title in two years.

Wyndham Clark Leads After First Round, Flirts with Course Record

Mother Nature greeted the first round of the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open with warm and open arms. Spectacular weather accompanied outstanding play from a number of the PGA TOUR’s best, but none better than Wyndham Clark who nearly tied the TPC Scottsdale course record with a 10-under-par 61. Birdies seemed to come in bunches for Clark who twice strung a trio together – once on the back and once on the front – for one shot off the pace of Phil Mickelson (2005, 2013) and Mark Caclavecchia’s (2001) rounds of 60. Former FedExCup Champion Billy Horschel is two shots off the pace at 8-under par and two-time WM Phoenix Open champion J.B. Holmes – who carded an ace on No. 4 today – is well within reach of the leader at 7-under par.

Four players are tied at 6-under including one of The Thunderbirds five sponsor exemptions, Harris English, and five players are tied at 5-under par making the 2020 WM Phoenix Open still anyone’s game with three rounds to play.

Pairings will be the same for Friday’s round with tee times starting at 7:20 a.m. Those who started on No. 1 tee will start on No. 10 tee and vice versa. Click the button below to see the full list of pairings.
