MESA, Ariz. — The first stop on the 2021 “Road to the LPGA” takes the Symetra Tour to Longbow Golf Club in the Grand Canyon State for the inaugural Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic from March 18-21.

Greeting the 132-player field in Mesa, Ariz., is a total purse of $200,000. Individuals are set to compete in a 72-hole stroke-play format with a cut to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes. The winner’s share for the event is $30,000.

Action gets underway at 7:00 a.m. local time all four days with play starting off No. 1 and No. 10 tees for the first two rounds and No. 1 for the third and final rounds.

SEVERAL COLLEGIATE TIES AT FIRST STOP

Nine individuals with ties to Arizona institutions for higher education are featured among the competition in the Grand Canyon State and are names to keep an eye on once the event starts on Thursday.

When Rory McIlroy triumphed at The Honda Classic in 2012, the then 22-year-old became the second-youngest player in history to reach world No. 1.

The man who still holds the record for being the youngest ever to reach No. 1 is Tiger Woods, and it was only fitting that, nine years ago, it was Woods who tested McIlroy's resolve on a windy Sunday at PGA National.

A ball-striking clinic over the first three days resulted in rounds of 66-67-66 to give McIlroy a two-stroke advantage heading into the final day, but it was McIlroy's short game that led him to prevail on an altogether different Sunday.

Early on in his round, a number of excellent up-and-downs helped McIlroy forge a seemingly comfortable four-stroke lead with just eight holes to play.

March 10, 2021 – The Symetra Tour will start the 2021 season at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, AZ for the inaugural Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic from March 18-21. The “Road to the LPGA” members ready to return after months of preparation will be joined by three amateurs looking to gain experience at the next level.

Tournament host, Longbow Golf Club, extended their sponsor exemption to Rose Zhang (Irvine, California). While only 17-years-old, Zhang is no stranger to the professional stage. She made the cut in her first LPGA Tour event three years ago at the ANA Inspiration and finished T60. Since then, she has competed in several other LPGA Tour events including two U.S. Women’s Opens and recorded a career-best Tour finish of T11 at the 2020 ANA Inspiration.

“Rose first played in competition at Longbow Golf Club as a 13-year-old high school freshman in the 2017 AJGA Heather Farr Classic. Since then, her accomplishments on the course have earned her rankings across the board and she consistently is a leader on the AJGA circuit where she is number one in Rolex AJGA girl’s ranking,” said Bob McNichols, the General Manager of Longbow Golf Club. “I have no doubt Rose will challenge the field of competitors here in Mesa.”
